Tuesday's Thrifty Tip

Last week, we started talking about saving money on entertainment.  You can save loads of money on your cable bill.

Some of you probably remember me talking about getting a Roku over Christmas.  Well, I got my Roku.  I love it.  With the Roku, you can watch most of your favorite shows.  There are several free channels, and there are some that you can pay for.  The only paid ones that we have are Netflix and Hulu Plus.

The Roku costs less than $100.  In fact, I got mine for $44.99.  Actually, I got mine for free because I got free Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks.  Anyway, there are no monthly fees for the Roku.  You will have to pay for Netflix and/or Hulu Plus.  However for both of these, it is only $16 a month.  I am sure this is just a fraction of the cost that you pay for cable or satellite.

Some people might save over $100 a month, if they switch to a Roku box.  I know there are other options like the Roku but I can't remember what the name of the other boxes are called.  Of course, you can watch Netflix, Hulu Plus, and more on gaming devices, some new tvs, and some Blu-Ray players.

So, how are you going to start saving money on your television bills?  How much will implementing just one option save you?

  2. We have a roku player and absolutely love it! It has saved us so much money - not just on rentals but on gas to and back from redbox or our library! Great suggestion and reminder!

  5. we actually don't have cable or satelite in our home, because the cost just doesn't justify the 2-3 channels we would actually watch. Most of the channels included in the packages are ones we wouldn't watch and don't want our kids having access too. And then to get the few channels we DO want, we'd have to buy the more expensive package just for 3 channels! Over $100/month for 3 channels and our local stations? not worth it for us. So we try to watch our favorite TV shows online, after the networks decide to put them up. Sometimes it's quite frustrating waiting for the networks to add the latest episode that aired on TV though...sometimes I really miss being able to watch a show at the same time as my friends and not have them spoil everything.

I will definitely have to check out this Roku!

  16. I use Netflix and Hulu. I was pretty much forced into a cable free life. The house I moved into is not wired for cable. Imagine that!! It's going quite well so far. 3 months into it and my 12 year old son hasn't even complained about cable!

  17. I just recently got a Roku as well. I personally love it! If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can also watch all the Prime Instant Videos as well.

    Thanks for sharing.

  18. I have playon and watch that through the xbox it can also be put on Roku, and many other players. You only get a few channels with the actual playon but there are many plugins most of which are free and very easy to install. If anyone wants to check it out the site is http://www.playon.tv/index.php

  19. You don't want to know what my cable bill is! I don't understand the Roku very well at all. I know what my needs are for my son - TV is his world - game shows and Barney and I know what my 14 yr. old likes. If I could be sure to get all of the families needs met and if I understood how Roku works - I'd make the switch. Make it a great weekend!
